About the Medes and Estartit
The Medes Islands are a true paradise for divers, often ranked among the finest dive sites in the Mediterranean. Located just off L’Estartit, this marine reserve protects a dazzling array of life, from massive groupers and schools of barracuda to delicate gorgonian corals and colorful nudibranchs. Among the most famous sites is La Vaca, a labyrinth of tunnels and overhangs covered in red and yellow corals, where divers glide through atmospheric rock passages teeming with life. Another highlight is El Dofí, named after a dolphin-shaped rock, with its dramatic arches and caves that create a sense of underwater cathedral. Shallow sites around Tascas Grandes and Ferránelles are perfect for beginners, while more experienced divers can explore caverns and vertical walls dropping into the deep.
Beyond the islands, the Costa Brava coastline offers just as much variety. Around Cap de Creus, divers find steep cliffs, underwater canyons, and abundant marine life in crystal-clear waters. Historic wrecks such as the Reggio Messina, a sunken ferry off the coast of L’Estartit, add an adventurous edge for technical and wreck-diving enthusiasts. Hidden coves, rocky outcrops, and natural arches scattered along the coast make every dive unique, with something for all levels of experience.
With its combination of world-class marine biodiversity, spectacular underwater landscapes, and excellent dive centers, the Medes Islands and Costa Brava offer an unforgettable diving experience that keeps enthusiasts returning year after year.
